APPRENTICE ELECTRICIAN - Transmission Substation Construction (multiple openings) HQ Location: 205 Southfield Parkway, Forest Park, GA but you will be assigned to work locations throughout the State of Georgia NOTE: We are anticipating filling several vacancies - we are actively sourcing and beginning the hiring process now for these positions.
Job Summary There are multiple openings for Apprentice Electricians who work in the construction of Transmission Substations throughout the state of Georgia.
Candidates hired as Apprentice Electricians will participate in a 3 – 3 ½ year training program.
Candidates hired as Apprentice Electricians who have 3 years or more Substation Construction experience may be evaluated, and based on experience, background, and competency, may be placed in a 12 – 18 month Advanced Apprentice Training program.
This position is a physically demanding position.
Working hours are normally Monday-Thursday 7:00am-5:30pm, ten-hour days and may require overnight and out-of-town stays during the week near the construction site.
Depending on work location, and home location you could be away from home as many as 200 nights per year accumulative not consecutive nights.
Travel expenses, hotel expenses and meals are the responsibility of the Apprentice Electrician with a per diem $140 per day, for employees working 50 miles of more from home and incurring overnight lodging expenses- this amount is negotiated with GPC and IBEW Local 84 and is subject to increase, a daily per-diem is also paid for employees who travel home each day and do not stay overnight and incur lodging expenses, “ Option 2” per diem is offered as well with GPC providing lodging expenses and $45 per day for employees.
This position is covered under the Memorandum of Agreement between Georgia Power Company and the IBEW Local No.
84 which includes a pay increase every six months until you reach the highest rate in your job classification, depending on progress and competency.
Currently there is also a cost-of-living increase annually, subject to negotiation between IBEW 84 and Georgia Power Company.
This position is subject to call-out overtime work, scheduled overtime work, and storm restoration response.
Under the Memorandum of Agreement, candidates hired as Apprentice Electricians into Section 6A are required to fulfill a 2-year obligation before they are eligible to bid into other company positions.
Job Requirements Education Requirements: High School diploma or equivalent Experience Requirements: It is strongly preferred candidates have prior experience in the following: Transmission Substation Construction Industrial construction, maintenance, utility, electrical and general construction Basic Construction Experience, equipment operation and hand/power tools.
It is a plus for candidates to have experience in the following: Working outdoors, with heavy equipment / machinery, heavy load rigging / lifting, emergency responders, commercial truck driving, tree trimming, farming, and welding Labor intensive occupations or physically demanding work environment Working with tools including but not limited to drills, circular saws, hydraulic presses or other battery powered hand tools.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Candidates must have: A basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background A basic knowledge of hand tools Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations Read tape measures and rulers Perform basic math (Addition/Subtraction/Fractions) Ability to take instruction, direction and translate those into actions Ability to perform physically demanding activities while working outside in all weather conditions Exhibit safe work practices and behaviors Must be able to add and subtract measurements of feet inches and fractions It is preferred candidates have prior experience with: Construction machinery such as skid steers, excavators, back hoes, cranes or heavy load rigging and lifting Transmission substation equipment and installation work to include bus fabrication, foundation installation, print reading and layout, switch installation, structure grounding or other substation construction skills It is a must for candidates to: Be self-motivated Take personal ownership of projects and assignments Have previously demonstrated the ability to successfully work in a team environment Have good communication skills Arrive on time at work Behavioral Attributes Demonstrate a commitment to Safety Excellence Display ethical behavior Understand the value of customer service and support Other Requirements 1.
Driver’s License and Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Candidates must have: A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or A valid driver's license and be able to attain a CDL within 6 months of employment Note: Any candidate who holds a current CDL will require verification with current and past employers upon job offer.

Pre-Employment Testing To be considered for an interview, candidates must pass: The Construction and Skilled Trades Exam (CAST test) Apply online for external postings.
Respond/accept interview communication.

Interview- Day in the Life If invited to an interview, candidates will be required to travel to a designated location in Georgia (mostly like the Atlanta area).
Candidates will not be paid for time or travel to complete these pre-employment tests and interview.
Provide current drivers license and sign waiver to release liability during the interview and physical pole climb.
Meet with current employees and answer basic questions regarding skills, abilities and facts for consideration.
As part of the interview, all candidates will be required to climb a steel pole and follow directions.
All persons will be fitted and supplied with the proper PPE for the climb.
Safety toed shoes with a defined heel should be worn to the interview for climbing purposes.

Prior To Employment Pass a Post Offer Evaluation Test (POET) Prior to employment , a thorough background check and DOT drug screen will be conducted (after a job offer is extended).
You must successfully meet requirements for a Pre-Employment (DOT) physical exam approved by our company physician and Worker's Compensation Medical Questionnaire.
Any offer of employment is contingent upon the applicant successfully completing all required fitness assessments.

Weight Restriction Because of the nature of our work and weight restrictions on our equipment a candidate must currently weigh and maintain their body weight at or below 325 pounds fully dressed including steel-toed work boots and hardhat.

Travel and Working Conditions All construction jobs require extended overnight stays and travel throughout the state of Georgia.
You could be away from home as many as 200 nights per year accumulative not consecutive.
Candidates must be able to work in extreme weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, snow and ice if required.
Must be able to work necessary overtime.
Additional Information Pay This is a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Georgia Power Company and IBEW Local 84.
Union membership is optional.
Current starting pay is $31.
73 hourly starting salary and is not negotiable.
Progressive pay increases and potential bonus compensation based on meeting necessary requirements.
Overtime is paid at 1.
5 times the hourly rate.
Training And Development Apprentice Electricians in Transmission Construction will undergo an extensive training program, including classroom and on-the-job training.
The training program lasts approximately 3 to 3 ½ years.
Upon successful completion of the training, the employee is eligible to bid on Electrician positions as they become available and be promoted to that classification.
